Description

PROVENANCE
Victor Spivak, Boston, Massachusetts (acquired new via Porsche of Westwood in 2011)
Current Owner (acquired from the above)

Unveiled in 1999, the GT3 represented a return to form for Porsche – the latest in a distinguished line of high-performance, normally aspirated 911 models built to satisfy both international racing regulations and hardcore sports car enthusiasts. In 2003, following four years of continued development, Porsche released the track-focused GT3 RS, thereby linking the GT3 to the legendary homologation specials that preceded it: the Carrera RS 2.7, the SC/RS, and the 964 Carrera RS 3.8.

With the new 997 series, Porsche continued to develop the GT3 RS, with displacement increasing from 3.6 to 3.8 liters in the second-generation model. In 2011, Porsche unveiled the final and ultimate evolution of the 997 GT3: the RS 4.0. It was immediately hailed as one of the greatest sports cars ever built and, in the years since, has come to be recognized as an undisputed classic. With the RS 4.0, Porsche engineers created a thinly veiled road-going version of the latest GT3 racing car, which had already captured numerous victories at the highest levels of international competition.

Like all GT3s, the RS 4.0 was powered by the brilliant Mezger flat-six engine, the basic architecture of which can be found in successful endurance racers such as the 962 and 911 GT1, as well as the 959 supercar. For the RS 4.0, Porsche used the crankshaft from the contemporary RSR race car and increased the stroke by 4 mm. The M97/74 engine produced an incredible 500 bhp at 8,250 rpm, allowing the 4.0 RS to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, en route to 193 mph flat out.

The RS 4.0’s outstanding driving dynamics were the result of meticulous testing and tuning by Porsche motor sport. In addition to utilizing motor-sports-quality suspension components, the RS 4.0 made extensive use of carbon fiber, keeping curb weight under 3,000 pounds. The RS 4.0 also benefited from the latest aerodynamic kit, including new front dive planes and an adjustable rear wing, which contributed 426 pounds of downforce at top speed. In total, only 600 examples of the GT3 RS 4.0 were built, with just 158 specified for the North American market.

The RS 4.0 presented here is a truly exceptional example of Porsche’s most revered modern-day 911. Notably, this car is one of only 36 North American models originally finished in black, of which just eight examples were specified in full “triple black” specification – with black paint, wheels, and interior. The RS’ appearance is even more striking due to its Exclusive Department exposed carbon fiber rear wing with red-painted wing plates, a nearly $10,000 option that differentiates this particular car from any other black RS 4.0 delivered to the US.

This RS 4.0 was also specified with an extensive option list that includes a red model designation on the engine lid, dynamic cornering lights, PCM 3.0 with extended navigation, Sport Chrono and Extended Carbon Packages, and the desirable front-axle lifting system, which makes the car much easier to maneuver around town. Additional Exclusive Department options include carbon side air vents, Alcantara storage lid, carbon fiber trim on the rear center console, and deviated stitching throughout the interior, including the dashboard, center console, door panels, and pull handles. These various options added more than $25,000 to the RS 4.0’s base price.

As noted on the original window sticker, this car was delivered to Porsche of Westwood in Massachusetts. The RS 4.0 was delivered to its first owner with nine miles and has been driven less than 90 miles since. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer displayed 96 miles. In keeping with its extremely limited use, the Porsche remains completely original and unmodified, just as it left the factory in 2011. Consistent with its extraordinary condition, this RS 4.0 is offered with its original owner’s folio (containing all books and manuals), tools, keys, window sticker, CARFAX Vehicle History Report, and a copy of the PCNA build sheet.

In consideration of its unique specification, exceptional original condition, and extraordinarily low mileage, this is a truly unrepeatable RS 4.0 – one that is sure to appeal to the most discriminating audience.
