With its eye-catching double-humped fiberglass tonneau cover and lower, removable windshield, the one-year-only 1989 Porsche Speedster is instantly recognizable to committed Porsche enthusiasts. Designed as a lightweight, racy homage to its 356 ancestor, the Speedster was reintroduced following a 35-year absence, with most examples of the highly desirable two-seat variant quietly disappearing into private collections.

Though the “Speedster” name had entered the automotive lexicon along with the Ford Model T racers of the early 20th century, it was Porsche that burned the moniker into the public consciousness with its spartan and nimble rear-engined 356—a car that built its reputation on the race circuits of southern California while carving out its place in 1950s popular culture. Fitting, then, that the nameplate would be revived for the final year of the Carrera 3.2, with a limited run of two-seat Speedsters (Option M503) built between January and August of 1989, some 823 of which—all based on the 911 Turbo body—were manufactured for the North American market.

This stunning and well-optioned 911 Speedster was manufactured on 6 June 1989, finished in the desirable shade of Grand Prix White, with color-matched Fuchs alloy wheels, over a Can Can Red leather interior. The convertible top was supplied new in Marine Blue, completing a rare color combination of red, white, and blue. Delivered new to Y B.H. Porsche in Edgemont, Pennsylvania on 18 July 1989, this Speedster was well-optioned according to the original Porsche delivery sheet, with over $6,000 of optional extras including a Blaupunkt radio, electric driver’s seat, height-adjustable passenger seat, limited slip differential, rear storage compartment, and a short gear lever.

In 2020, the current owner spent $5,891.14 with Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas, Nevada having a “Porsche World Class Inspection” carried out, including servicing of the engine, gearbox, brake, and fuel systems, and fitting of a fresh battery and four new tires. A copy of the invoice is on file.

This remarkable Porsche 911 Speedster presents as exciting an ownership proposition today as it did in 1989, having covered just 1,409 miles from new at the time of cataloging. Coupled with its matching-numbers chassis and engine, low ownership, and striking factory-correct Grand Prix White, Can Can Red, and Marine Blue color scheme, this Speedster presents a rare opportunity for collectors of the marque.
