Launched in 1995, the 993 Carrera RS was the latest Porsche 911 model to wear the famous RS badge. Following in its predecessors’ footsteps, the new RS was conceived as another homologation special to qualify the 993 RSR 3.8 for motorsport competition, with Porsche applying similar weight-saving and tuning measures as previous to render a sharper, more track-focused model.

Weighing in at 2,800 pounds – almost 220 pounds less than the 993 Carrera 2 – the RS seam-welded body shell was devoid of extraneous convenience features including power seats, air-conditioning, electric windows, rear defroster, rear seats, air bags, and speakers, although some items could be added back. The front trunk and doors were replaced with lighter, aluminum items, along with thinner glass. The chassis was upgraded with ball-joint front damper mounts, adjustable anti-roll bars, and front strut brace. Larger four-piston brake calipers increased stopping force.

The 3.8-liter M64/20 air-cooled flat-six engine featured forged pistons, relocated wrist pins, lightened rocker arms, and Porsche’s VarioRam variable-length intake system, which boosted torque through the lower and midrange . Producing 296 hp at 6,500 rpm and 262 lbs./ft. of torque at 5,400 rpm, thrust was delivered to the rear wheels through a Type G50/31 six-speed manual transaxle with gearing optimized for acceleration. Porsche claimed a 0–60 mph time of 4.7 seconds, 0–100 mph in 11.2 seconds and a 172 mph top speed. Perhaps more importantly, the new RS was more accessible than its 964 RS forerunner with a more compliant ride and enhanced handling, courtesy of the improved 993 platform.

First delivered in Germany, this 1995 Porsche Carrera RS is finished in Guards Red over a black leather interior, and was equipped with air-conditioning, electric windows, and front air bags, restoring a measure of comfort. While its early history is not well documented, this RS is understood to have been exported to the US in 2003 and federalized by G & K Automotive Services of Santa Ana, California. The RS was subsequently acquired by another California-based private collection of rare and important postwar sports cars. At some time, this RS was repainted in its original Guards Red, while an optional Clubsport double-plane rear wing, front splitter, roll cage, and hood pins were fitted.

In 2015, this RS was acquired by the current owner and has benefitted from sparing use since. This 993 RS registered 42,081 miles at the time of cataloguing, and presents in lovely condition throughout.

Only 1,104 RS models were made to satisfy worldwide demand. Not originally offered for sale in the US, and still a rare sight on American roads, this sale represents an opportunity for collectors to acquire a sought-after and competition-derived 993 RS.
