Only the third entirely new platform since the original 911 launched, the 991 launched in 2011 as a replacement for the 997 generation. The 991 was slightly larger overall, the wheel base was increased by 100mm and the overall length by 70mm. A newly developed trans axel allowed the rear wheels to be moved 76mm back from the engine which served to significantly improve the weight distribution and therefore cornering performance. Use of high strength steel, aluminium and composites reduced the curbweight to 1,380kg. The updates and weight reductions make the 991 generation vehicles lively and refreshing to drive.  

The 991 generation Cabriolet designers strove to preserve the coupe’s silhouette and translate the allure of the original shape into a convertible body. This was accomplished thanks to a four-part electro-hydraulically powered folding roof system. When the top is down, users can enjoy the unfiltered sound of the singing Zuffenhausen flat six, but thanks to the new design, when the top is up, the road noise is no worse than in the standard coupe. The 991 Carrera S was equipped with a direct fuel injection 3.8 L boxer engine that produced 395hp making the drive exhilarating with the top up and down.
