Description

With the introduction of the 964, Porsche revived its famous nameplate for an elemental, thoroughbred sports car built in the spirit of the original Carrera RS 2.7. Like its forbear, the 964 RS was engineered for maximum performance. It was stripped of luxuries and its strengthened, seam-welded chassis was equipped with a more powerful engine, larger brakes, revised suspension, lightweight Cup wheels, and Recaro bucket seats. The Carrera RS presented here is among the finest examples of this rare breed, exhibiting exceptional originality, low mileage, and a visually captivating livery.

Completed on June 1, 1992, this car was equipped for German delivery and specified in lightweight trim – without air-conditioning, power windows, or a model designation. Its first owner, Dr. Heinrich Theodor Klein of Saarbrücken, Germany, had a unique vision for his RS. He custom-ordered it in Saturn Yellow (Saturngelb, code 123), a true paint-to-sample finish that is a fantastic, modern interpretation of the color originally offered in the 1973 Porsche 914 catalogue. The color possesses an intense and vibrant luminescence, which must be seen in person to be fully appreciated.

Dr. Klein drove his RS sparingly throughout his 19-year ownership and entrusted it to Porsche Zentrum Saarland for service. When he sold the car in 2011 to Dagobert Kampa, it had covered just 5,500 km (approximately 3,417 miles).

Michael Kelter of Birmingham, Michigan, a renowned collector of the rarest and most important modern Porsches, purchased this unique 964 RS from Germany in 2019 and imported it to the US. During his ownership, Kelter remarked upon the car’s uncommon quality and originality, noting that various factory markings were still present throughout. Further supporting its impeccable condition, the RS is accompanied by a copy of the Porsche Motorsport service information binder, tool roll, emergency road equipment, a leather folio containing the original owner’s manual, service directory, touring pass, and a stamped warranty book. It is also offered with a Porsche Production Specifications sheet, service records, and correspondence, as well as original German registration and TÜV papers. The consignor acquired the RS in 2019 and it has since remained in his impressive collection of postwar sports cars. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer showed less than 6,000 km (approximately 3,728 miles).

Very few of these special 964 RS models were ordered in paint-to-sample colors: this is the only one – and perhaps the only Porsche since 1973 – finished in Saturn Yellow. Beyond its unique livery, this car’s remarkable low mileage, outstanding documentation, and extraordinarily original condition place this 964 RS in a category of its own. For the collector looking to acquire a one-of-a-kind 964 RS of incredible quality and distinction, the search ends here.
