With its unique profile and race-inspired lineage, the 356 became the first Porsche to proudly bear the family name of Ferdinand Porsche. Introduced in 1948, the 356 continually evolved with design and mechanical refinements with the last series of improvements culminating in 1965 when production yielded to the 911. The 1964 model included the addition of disc brakes and the SC featuring twin Solex carburetors, 9.5:1 compression, and larger intake and exhaust valves. These improvements along with a high lift camshaft resulted in 95hp for the 1600cc engine.History of this 356
According to a copy of the Porsche Kardex and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity accompanying this car, this example was delivered in September 1963 with an Electric Sliding Roof, Chromed Wheels, Radio Blaupunkt “Frankfurt”, 2 Loudspeakers, and Radio Antenna. The car was finished in “Condor Yellow” (6010), a lighter yellow hue Porsche offered as a special-order paint, and the interior was trimmed in black leather. Most importantly this car was ordered with the SC package which included the higher horsepower engine. Though records indicating the first owner are not known at this time, service records retained with this 356 SC begin in April 1971 with 47,995 miles indicated on the first service, invoiced in Racine, Wisconsin. Service invoices continue into the late 1980s, by then under new Wisconsin based ownership with most invoices accounting for specialty parts typically purchased as part of a restoration including engine decals, various hardware, hoses etc. Further invoices for metal body parts include new rockers, battery floor, frame struts left and right, and wheel inners. In 1989 the body was chemically stripped, chassis sandblasted, sunroof removed, floors and rockers replaced, and leading performed on the door openings over the newly replaced metal. By the early 1990s specialty parts were purchased at Stoddard to complete the restoration. Work included body and paint, misc. engine work, resurfacing flywheel, new exhaust, brake hoses, calipers, suspension, assorted chrome plating (headlight rims, hood ornament, bumper guards, door handles and strips, radio face plate, various knobs), new emblems, taillights, reverse light, and reflectors. A new windshield and rear glass were also installed. The restoration appears to have been completed in late 1992 when it is serviced locally in Appleton, WI with the same owner, then indicating 50,484 miles. The following year a piston and cylinder set, main bearing, rod bearings, and engine gaskets were ordered, and the crank was sent out for service, balanced, and gears changed. By 1994 the car was sold to a new Wisconsin owner who would retain the car for almost 20 years. By 1999 the same owners had moved to Oregon where the car was regularly serviced at Carrera Motors, Bend, OR then indicating 59,932 miles. In 2003, 62,757 miles were indicated when new tires were installed. Service continued with this owner and Carrera Motors through 2012 when the car had 67,053 miles. In 2016, under new ownership a new ATE master cylinder was installed, front and rear calipers rebuilt, new brake lines, wheel bearings repacked, and new plugs were installed, then showing 68,200 miles. In 2017 the transmission was removed, and all seals replaced including a new T.O. bearing, axle bearings, and hoop mounts. In 2018, the engine was removed for cosmetic improvement, both carburetors rebuilt, and a new clutch installed. Mileage at this time was recorded 69,250. In 2019, with 70,094 miles, new leather seat upholstery was installed on the front seats, new shocks, a new clutch cable, new H4 headlights, and a new set of Vredestein tires were installed and in 2020 Palo Alto Speedometer converted the clock to quartz movement. The last general service and oil change was recorded in March 2021 with 71,367 miles at McMinnville VW, OR. General ConditionToday with 72,357 miles indicated, this 356 SC Coupe offers high-driver level cosmetics indicative of a car that was properly restored 30 years ago but stored indoors and professionally maintained under thoughtful enthusiast ownership. Importantly, the mileage has consecutively accumulated indicating a strong likelihood that the miles are original to this car. Further, both the engine and transmission numbers match the Kardex and Porsche COA. The hood and engine lid also bear the matching three digits that correspond to the VIN of this car. Finished in a rare special-order color, the Condor Yellow finish is very appropriate for this era. One of four available “special order” colors, the paint is smooth, consistent, and glossy. The trim is in excellent condition overall with very good chrome particularly on the door handles and window frames, often found lacking even in more recently completed restorations. The lenses, glass, lighting, various trim, and script are all in excellent condition contributing to the overall cohesive visual presentation of this factory SC. The panel gaps are consistent with very nice closures and tight fit, even for both doors which have excellent part lines even at the bottom edges. Outfitted with chrome wheel covers and painted silver wheels, the car wears a set of Vredestein tires purchased in 2019. The black leather interior presents very well including the more recently reupholstered leather seats. The door panels, carpeting, and side panels all have a very nice quality feel to the finishes, while the headliner and rear seats appear to be original to the car, in harmony with the overall interior. The dashboard is quite nice, featuring clean and contrasting gauge faces accented by matching yellow paint and black dash padding. The car is outfitted with a factory radio and the clock is operational having been rebuilt in 2020 with a modern quartz movement. The wood rim steering wheel, prepared and finished by Porsche expert Jack L. Arct, Portland, OR is beautifully finished with a correct chrome horn ring, and a glossy Porsche center emblem. The electric sunroof operates smoothly, and seals shut with smooth part lines on the exterior of the car. Under the twin grille hood, the SC engine bay and matching number 1600cc engine deliver a thoughtful and correct presentation reflective of the period with correct carburetors and air cleaners. The engine and engine compartment display correct finishes reflective of Porsches from this period, with some patina now evident since the restoration was completed. The front storage compartment is clean and well-maintained with a matching spare wheel, leather hold down strap, and softly aged finishes. Both the production tag and VIN stamping match. The undercarriage displays sound floor pans, evidence that the battery box has been replaced, sound longitudinals, and correct suspension components. The underside reveals the original gearbox stampings indicating the same number listed on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and Kardex. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiast seeking a very handsome sunroof equipped 356 with disc brakes, matching numbers, and delightfully drivable cosmetic condition. Included with this Porsche 356An original Porsche 356 owner’s manual, a set of windshield wiper arms in plastic, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, copies of the Kardex, two sets of keys and spare single key, tool roll with tools, jack, 50 years of records, restoration photo documentation, and a 2019 Porsche 356 Registry Flagstaff event satchel are included with the car.
