Combining open-top driving pleasure with refined driving characteristics, the Speedster variant has long been a staple of Porsche’s sports car lineup. Its popularity is thanks to none other than the 356 Speedster, introduced to the US market in 1954. It combined the style of a cabriolet with a raked windscreen and minimalist interior equipment. Designed to compete with the less-expensive British sports cars, its purpose was simple: provide an option for drivers who desired a bare-bones sports car dedicated solely to the sheer enjoyment of driving.

Since its introduction, the 356 Speedster has remained a sought-after option among enthusiasts. Initially powered by a 1.5-liter flat-four, the introduction of the 356 A in 1955 offered numerous changes, including an increase in power with the new 1.6-liter, 60 bhp engine. According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity on file, chassis 81120 was completed on November 30, 1955, and is thus amongst the earliest of the 356 A Speedsters built. It left the factory wearing Signal Red paint, a Beige leatherette interior, and US specification sealed-beam headlights. Imported to the US by Hoffman Motor Company, it was sent directly to Competition Motors in Los Angeles, and has remained in Los Angeles ever since.

Its first owner, Dr. Charles Brewer, lovingly cared for the car for over 30 years, preserving it in original condition. By the 1980s, it was in the hands of Hinz Rowland, who after many years of enjoyment, gave the Speedster an updated coat of Signal Red paint, and subsequently passed it into the ownership of Ben Reiling. Under Mr. Reiling’s ownership, the Speedster frequented local concours events, finishing in the top of its class on numerous occasions.

By 2013, an extensive two-year restoration was commissioned, performed by Nick’s Old Car Specialty of Redlands, California. During its restoration, the original engine and four-speed manual transaxle were completely rebuilt, its Signal Red paint was restored, and more recently, high-quality, knock-off, Rudge-style wheels were fitted. The result, documented with extensive photographs and receipts, is a stunning, period-correct finish, which has continued to place top of class at prestigious events following the restoration.

Beautifully presented today, this 356 A Speedster is accompanied by an owner’s manual, tool kit, jack, brake drums, and five date-coded, five-lug wheels. In addition, its COA, a copy of its original Kardex, and awards are provided. Eligible for countless rallies and concours events, this remarkable example of a 356 A Speedster checks all the boxes and presents an opportunity for its next owner to drive, show, and enjoy.
