Description

1979 saw a major transformation for Pontiac’s beloved Firebird, featuring a completely restyled body with improved aerodynamics, larger fender flares, and an enhanced rear spoiler. It also marked the end of the line for big-block V-8s from Pontiac with the optional 400 cid W72 V-8 engine. Claimed by Pontiac to produce 220 hp and 320 lbs./ft. of torque, independent tests suggested that output was in fact closer to 280 hp, making the W72-equipped Firebirds one of the best-performing American cars of their era.

This 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is a particularly unique time capsule example that shows just 41 miles from new. Painted in stunning Nocturne Blue Metallic with the quintessential gold “Firebird” graphic on the hood, this car has been equipped with the W72 400 cid V-8 paired to a four-speed manual gearbox, which was mandatory when choosing the larger engine. Another required option with the big block was the WS6 handling package, giving the car sportier springs and shocks along with a constant ratio steering box and larger rear sway bar. The custom-order brown Doeskin vinyl interior is in outstanding condition throughout and includes convenience features like air-conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. Additionally, original factory literature is included with the car, making this Firebird Trans Am as close to showroom condition as one can find among 44-year-old Pontiacs.
