Description
By 1974, the American muscle car was all but dead due to increasingly stringent emissions regulations that strangled performance, hitting large-displacement cars especially hard. However, there was one holdout for the 1974 model year: the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Super Duty 455. Although it was equipped with some smog equipment, beneath the Firebird-emblazoned shaker hood sits a 455 cid V-8 with forged internals conservatively rated at 290 hp and 395 lbs./ft. of torque. Independent testing showed that a showroom-stock Super Duty could run the quarter mile in the low 14-second range, making it one of the fastest American production cars of its day. In all, just 943 examples were built for the 1974 model year. This Super Duty 455 is an outstanding, unrestored example, finished in Admiralty Blue over a black vinyl and velour interior. Desirably equipped with a rare four-speed manual gearbox and iconic Firebird hood graphics, this Trans Am was kept in the care of its first owner for nearly 40 years and has had just two additional caretakers since. Showing just 16,016 miles when catalogued, this Pontiac remains in excellent original condition and is being offered with its original window sticker, owner’s manual, warranty and emissions control books, and factory service manual. The year 1974 was the final year for the Trans Am Super Duty, and only 212 were built with the coveted four-speed manual gearbox. With its end-of-an-era status, this well-optioned, survivor-quality Trans Am Super Duty is a crucial addition to any muscle car collection.
