The Model: With the musclecar era in full swing, Plymouth set out to create a back to basics vehicle that could keep up with the competition. No stranger to high horsepower performance, Plymouth started with the basic Belvedere and added a special 383 cubic inch version of the famous “Wedge” engine. Handling and steering were beefed up and for stopping power, disc brakes were included in the Roadrunner package. Taking its name for the legendary cartoon character, of which the Chrysler Corporation paid Warner Brothers $50,000 for the rights to use the perky little bird’s image on the car and in advertising. Another $10,000 was spent on the development of the special Beep Beep horn, the most important part of the package for many. While the basic package was rather Spartan there was a wide variety of accessories add to comfort for the occupants, and going even faster.
The Car: Finished in its original color of Saddle Bronze metallic with the trademark blackout hood stripes, it is complimented with an optional black vinyl roof, plus tinted glass including the banded windshield. Interior features start with optional bucket seats in light IvyGreen vinyl accented by dark green garnish, while the dash is equipped with standard gauges as well as AM radio and the highly coveted in-dash tachometer. Under the hood of this mighty Plymouth, one finds the engine compartment properly detailed with just a hint of patina showing on the decals. Another option included in this package is a full set of Magnum 500 wheels wearing raisedwhite letter Wide Oval tires. While this Roadrunner looks show car-ready, we understand that it starts up easily and is reported to hold its own on the road. One of the most iconic members of the muscle car movement, don’t let this birdie escape from your collection.
