Description

It was in the mid-1970s that the trend for compact sports models emerged, spearheaded by the legendary Golf GTI. It was only in 1984, eight years after the Golf GTI had been introduced, that Peugeot successfully launched its first 205 GTI, powered by a four-cylinder 1600cc engine. Two years later, the Sochaux-based manufacturer added a second version to its range, for which the most important change was an increase in engine size to 1900cc. This proved an even more formidable machine, developing 130bhp at 6000rpm!
It reached 1000m from a standing start in under 30 seconds, an exceptional feat for the time. To handle this performance, it had highly effective front suspension and disc brakes not only at the front, but also at the rear, further distinguishing it from its lower-powered twin. The 205 GTI was an overwhelming success until it bowed out in 1993.
The car which we are offering for sale has had two previous owners, the second since 2014. As soon as he acquired it, he decided to completely restore the car. The cylinder head and steering rack gaskets, braking system, starter motor, alternator, clutch and distributor... nearly all the major components were replaced. The bodywork too was given a facelift. All the work carried out has been documented in a photographic record which will be supplied along with the fully stamped service booklet. With 204,000km (127,000 miles) recorded, this 205 GTI 1.9 is a 130bhp version, i.e. a non-catalytic converter model. Its immaculate black paintwork (without a sign of rust) suits it perfectly and is set off by the traditional red pinstripe which can also be seen inside the car. The upholstery is in a condition to match the bodywork, without any tears. This combination of colours takes us back into the world of motorsport that was dear to the marque. The interior fittings are every bit as good as the rest of the car and everything works perfectly. Although it was an option rarely specified at the time - as purists believed it detracted from the car's structural rigidity - this model is fitted with the large sliding sunroof which makes the interior very light and airy and greatly contributes to the enjoyment of the car in the open air. Thanks to the extensive restoration undertaken, this 205 GTI 1.9 drives beautifully and will bring many more years of pleasure to its new owner.
