In 1983 the Peugeot 205 appeared on the market, it would be a direct sales hit for the French brand. Contrary to what most people think, the 205 was not designed by Pininfarina, they only designed the convertible version. The designer Gerard Welter drew the 205 in-house. In 1984 the Peugeot 205 GTI came on the market with a 1,580cc injection engine that delivered 115hp. In 1987 the 1.9 GTI was added with a 1.905cc engine with 130hp. There was also a version with a catalytic converter that brought it up to 122hp. Together with the low weight of 880 kg, this resulted in serious performance, as the 1.9 GTI sprinted from 0 to 100 in 7.8 seconds and the top speed was 206 km/h. It was therefore the ultimate 'boy racer'.

From 1988 to 1992, the Peugeot 205 Rallye appeared on the market as a cheaper alternative to the GTI and was produced by Peugeot-Talbot Sport. Under the hood was a 1,294cc four-cylinder with twin Weber carburettors that delivered 103hp. The Rally got the suspension, ventilated disc brakes front and rear axle of the 1.6 GTI. It was a very spartan car with all luxury items and sound insulation removed to achieve the lowest possible weight, in the end the scales indicated a nice 794kg!
