A project that began in 1982 with Group B rule changes, a nearly unlimited budget was made available by Peugeot to create a car with the help of Jean Todt that could defeat the unstoppable force of the Audi Sport Quattro. It worked! the T16 would rack up 16 outright wins and two world championships. More than the Audi would achieve. The Group B rules meant that 200 production units had to be completed to make the rally car eligible.
The T16 was based on the production 205 hatchback, but extensive modification was needed to accommodate the wider tyres, mid-engine and four wheel drive layout. From most angles it still retained the core looks of the standard road car but with each angle it looked a little wider, higher and more purposeful. The car was powered by a detuned version of the 1.7 litre turbocharged four cylinder producing 197 horsepower in road going specification.
This highly desirable example joins us with just 6,300 miles from new. Presented in Grey Metallic with its original two-tone leather and fabric Peugeot lion emblazoned seats in excellent condition. Delivered new in 1985 this example has been used sparingly and presents as such. Purchased in Paris in 1999 by Mr Keenly, the car would go on to spend 11 years in the United States. As a result of regulations in the USA, it was available for import only under a Show or Display permit, limiting the car to 2,500 miles per year. Purchased in 2005 with just 3,250 miles, the car was transported from California to Michigan to its new keeper, Mr Faloppa who would retain the car for a further 5 years. In 2010 the car was exported to the UK.
Most recently it has been kept in a private collection in Europe. The car will be serviced as part of the sale and is available to view at our showrooms just outside London immediately.
