The French have always been the masters of the hot hatch, but the Peugeot 106 Rallye may very well be the greatest of them all. With its boxy form enveloped by a dazzling shade of Cherry Red, and a bit of motorsport styling in the shape of some Peugeot Talbot Sport racing stripes, the Rallye transformed a mundane hatchback into a true cult icon. Weigh-saving was the key to the cars success, with a back to basics design featuring simple steel wheels, finished in gloss white, and even stickers replacing the rear Peugeot badging to save precious grams.
Subject to a full respray as part of a photographic restoration this example presents very well, free from any signs of corrosion the car shows with extraordinary depth to the vibrant Cherry finish.
Marketed with the phrase “fewer frills, more thrills”, the interior of the Rallye is a simplistic space focused on delivering a pure driving experience. Refreshing in a world of tech filled interiors the 106 features just a basic FM radio, heated rear screen and cigarette lighter, ditching any electric windows, central locking and even airbags in pursuit of a true lightweight space. Upholstery is minimal but comfortable, with fabric sets providing good support whilst the doors feature an armrest and some fabric surrounded otherwise by bare metal in a tonal Cherry red finish.
Considering the age and mileage of the car overall condition of the interior is clean, with the dashboard and carpets showing free from any major blemishes.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Conceived out of necessity from Peugeot to meet international group N and A rallying regulations, the Series 106 Rallye is a genuine homologation hero of the 90s. Early cars, such as this example, feature the race derived 1.3 TU2J2 engine; a 4-pot, 8 valve, high compression engine, the design utilised an aggressive cam profile which kicked into life 5,400rpm and gave the S1 its distinctive high revving character.
Producing 100bhp is fairly dull by modern standards, but taking into consideration the 825kg curb weight of the Rallye and short ratio gearbox things start to make a bit more sense. Driving the Rallye is full driver involvement; trying to hold the car in the revs through twisty B-roads with no inertia or driver aids to hinder progression.
Mechanically this example appears in very good order, with 11 stamps in the original service book and a recent overhaul as part of the cars extensive restoration work.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Rounding off the utilitarian Rallye aesthetic are the classic 14″ steel wheel, finished in a flawless coat of gloss white to offset the vibrant red finish. Matching Pirelli P6000 rubber sits at each corner with plenty of tread remaining all around.
Underpinning the superb handling of the 106 Rallye are a set up uprated anti-roll bars, with 22mm at the front and 21mm at the rear, as well as forged steel front wishbones.
Supplied new on 10/10/1995 by Richard & Sons, Truro, this incredible Peugeot 106 Rallye has become something of a rarity in modern motoring, with just 117 examples currently taxed and driving on UK roads, with most UK cars stripped for racing purposes. Servicing of the car is outlined by the stamped original service book, with 11 stamps up to 2009, when the car had covered 118k miles.
Online MOT history shows the car stayed on the road until 2014 and was then put into storage before being purchased in 2020 by an enthusiast. From this point the car was subject to a restoration by the owner, with a photographic log documenting the work that included a full strip down and windows out respray before being returned to its former glory. Since the extensive work the car has covered less than 1k miles and has an MOT free from advisories that is valid until March 2022.
Present with the car is the stamped original service book, original wallet and some relevant books, restoration photo log and V5.
