Description

Already renowned among America’s finest automobile manufacturers, Packard went from strength to strength during the 1910s under the able leadership of Henry Joy, Alvan Macauley, and engineer Jesse Vincent – taking command of the luxury market on both sides of the Atlantic. Packard became the world’s first maker of a 12-cylinder model with the mighty Twin Six, introduced in 1916 and produced until 1923.

Sold new in Los Angeles by the early Packard dealer, business legend, and philanthropist Earle C. Anthony, this 1917 Packard Four-Passenger Brougham is a second-series Model 2-25 example on the 125" wheelbase Twin Six chassis. Circa 1960, it was discovered wearing 1932 registration plates in a sagging garage near the Los Angeles Coliseum by prolific automotive author and publisher Floyd Clymer, who subsequently carried out the Packard’s restoration. Predictably, Mr. Clymer’s discovery of the Twin Six and its fascinating history generated a number of articles in classic car publications through his ownership.

Subsequently, the Packard was owned by Mr. Clymer’s son-in-law, Jeff Robinson, and his family. By 1971, it was on display at the American Auto Museum collection in Grand Junction, Colorado, owned by Marlon David Sell. Following dispersal of the museum collection, the venerable Packard was placed on display at the Museum of the Pacific in Hawaii; following that site’s closure, the Twin Six was repurchased by Mr. Sell. Circa 1973, it was acquired by Don Cose of Tracy, California, and then eventually passed into the hands of Mark Smith in June 2008.

Carrying a delightful patina on its 1960s restoration under Mr. Clymer, this historic Twin Six is fully equipped with numerous period accessories demanding close inspection for their rarity and delightful presence, including an external Boyce MotoMeter with Packard radiator shell and aircraft motif, a dash-mounted Boyce MotoMeter, a combination speedometer and clock, Bijur centralized chassis lubrication, dual rim-mounted spares, and a pair of boxed accessory lamps. Also included is a magnificent original Packard Cup trophy awarded to Earle C. Anthony’s Packard organization for winning the Division A Sales Contest.

Pure automotive history on wheels, this rare Twin Six Four-Passenger Brougham ought to appeal to any admirer of the legendary Packard marque.
