Packard’s Ninth Series Light Eight line, introduced for 1932, was not the automaker’s first attempt at producing a smaller, more affordable offering, nor would it be its last. But as it became clear that the Great Depression was more than just a passing mood, the task of appealing to a broader—if still relatively well-off—audience acquired a greater urgency.

With a weight of 3,930 pounds, the Light Eight 2/4 Passenger Coupe Roadster was indeed light (at least compared to the larger Packards of the era), and its $1,795 price tag represented a significant value when compared to the larger Standard Eights. Yet the Light Eight line was simultaneously too expensive to attract meaningful sales volume and too cheaply priced to make economic sense for Packard. Caught in this limbo, the Light Eight was discontinued before the 1933 model year. Only 6,750 examples, encompassing four body styles, were believed to have been produced in total.

Those savvy enough to purchase a Light Eight new, and those fortune enough to own one today, enjoy a rare and attractive Packard offering. The model line received unique styling touches, most notably the special “shovelnose” grille, and the two-door offerings—including this 2/4 Passenger Coupe Roadster—enjoy a low, almost custom, appearance. The model’s 110-horsepower, 320-cubic-inch straight-eight engine and three-speed manual transmission, coupled with the lower curb weight, make for comparatively athletic on-road performance as well.

According to its cowl tag, this Coupe Roadster was delivered new via the Los Angeles showroom of Earle C. Anthony, an important California Packard distributor. Today, it wears an older restoration in two-tone brown over a brown interior with a tan convertible top. It is equipped with dual sidemount spares, a rear trunk rack, a driver’s side mirror, and driving lights.

A Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) Full Classic, this 1932 Packard Light Eight 2/4 Passenger Coupe Roadster would make for an appealing addition to any collection and, with suitable preparation, an ideal candidate for touring enjoyment.
