Description
This elegant Packard Eight was, according to details provided by the consignor, sold new to bandleader Paul Whiteman. After being passed among three owners in South Carolina, it was purchased in 1953 by James Nelson of Tryon, North Carolina, for $125. Mr. Nelson kept the Packard in his collection until his death in 1988, when it was acquired by the consignor.
The consignor says the Packard was in solid original condition at the time of his purchase, and he quickly enlisted noted restorer Walt Johnsen in Washington state to perform a comprehensive frame-off restoration and bring it to concours standards. Soon after, this Packard won First in Class at the 1990 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, as well as a 100-point score at the CCCA Pacific Northwest Grand Classic the following year. This Packard Eight, which still shows extremely well almost 30 years after its splendid restoration, has been carefully maintained and driven on three CCCA Caravans.
With its snug-fitting top and roll-up windows, the 1101 Convertible Sedan possesses the comfort of a closed car but can easily convert to a sporting, open-air tourer. Elegant styling, quality engineering, and reliability made Packards a pleasure to own and drive, and that still applies to this example today.
