Description

The first generation of the Nissan Patrol, then called 4W60 was based on a Japanese governments Commission from 1950. The country was in dire need of four-wheel drive vehicles, for fire services, police and military after the massive destruction caused by the Second World War. Toyota and Mitsubishi also took up the challenge with Mitsubishi finally getting the contract. Despite this set back, Nissan continued with the project and decided to offer their vehicle for the civil market. With the Series 60 this four-wheel drive was first offered under the name of Patrol. It was produced from October 1960 and was technically more or less identical with its predecessor. Only the design had changed and the engine, stemming from the model 4W66, first delivered 125 horsepower from 4 litres capacity. Modifications to the carburettor, compression ratio and valve timing in 1965 brought the performance up to 145 horsepower. The Patrol offered, with its short wheelbase and hard top, most probably was a Swiss delivery and was first registered on the 11th of October 1972. The history of this robust and reliable tool is not known until in December 2007, when it was taken over in a rather sorry state by the vendor. He had the coachwork and the interior of his cult four-wheel drive restored with the mechanical bits checked and overhauled as necessary and at the same time 5 new tyres were fitted. Receipts for around 23’000 francs are available and will be handed over with the car. Since its completion, the Nissan has been driven around 5’000 kilometres and in February 2024, 80 kilometres ago, it received an oil change. Today the cool four-wheel drive presents itself in good condition with the 4 litre 6-cylinder engine running well and the three speed gearbox shifting correctly. The last veteran MOT was completed in August 2020 allowing the Patrol to be registered in most cantons immediately.
