Beaucoup de collectionneurs possèdent un roadster anglais des années 1950-1960. Et dans cette catégorie, la Morgan occupe une place de choix. Sa conception archaïque lui a permis de traverser les époques sans jamais réellement vieillir, puisque elle fut continuellement améliorée. Certaines caractéristiques techniques sont devenues exclusives de ce mythe britannique, comme la carrosserie réalisée sur une ossature en bois. Dans l’histoire de la marque, les Plus 4 ont permis de remporter de nombreux et grands succès en compétition, aussi bien aux Etats-Unis dans le championnat SCCA qu’aux 24 Heures du Mans. Présentée en 1961, la version Super Sport est sans aucun doute la plus exclusive de toutes les Plus 4. Elle doit sa commercialisation aux exploits en compétition du pilote Chris Lawrence, imbattable dès 1956 au volant de « TOK 258 », et qui remporta notamment sa catégorie aux 24 Heures du Mans 1962. La configuration unique des Super Sport comprend ainsi une préparation moteur « Lawrence Tuned », une carrosserie en aluminium et des freins à disque. Seulement 95 exemplaires seront produits.

Le châssis #5122 est l’une de ces authentiques Super Sport. Son certificat Morgan indique qu’elle sortit d’usine le 31 mai 1962, avant d’être envoyée au garage de Lew Spencer de Los Angeles. D’origine, la voiture aurait été livrée bleue avec un intérieur en cuir noir. Le dossier de factures nous permet de connaitre ses propriétaires successifs jusqu’au milieu des années 1960. En 1988, son dernier propriétaire américain entreprend une restauration complète. Vraisemblablement d’un excellent niveau, puisque #5122 participera à de nombreux concours, en gagnant sa classe au Morgan N/S California et arrivant deuxième au Best of Show de ce même événement. Nous la reverrons aussi au Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive Concours, à San Marino Motor Classic… Son propriétaire actuel s’en porte acquéreur en 2015, avant de l’importer en France. La voiture se présente aujourd’hui à nous dans un bon état général. Son intérieur en cuir présente une très belle patine et sa peinture est encore bien conservée, avec quelques très légers défauts. D’un point de vue mécanique, la voiture fonctionne merveilleusement bien. La préparation Lawrence Tune lui confère un comportement sportif très agréable, les carburateurs Weber gavent correctement le 4-cylindres, et la carrosserie en aluminium participe parfaitement à la légèreté de l’ensemble. Récemment, la voiture a benéficié de nombreux travaux, parmi lesquels on notera le changement de l’embrayage, et une très importante révision mécanique, ou encore le changement des pneus. Le couvre-tonneau a également été refait. Voici une très belle opportunité d’acquérir une rarissime et authentique Plus 4 Super Sport dans un état de fonctionnement optimal !

Many collectors own a British roadster from the 1950s and 1960s. And in this category, the Morgan occupies a prominent place. Its archaic design has allowed it to pass through the ages without ever really aging, as it was continuously improved. Certain technical features have become exclusive to this British myth, such as the bodywork built on a wooden frame. In the history of the brand, the Plus 4s have achieved many great successes in competition, both in the United States in the SCCA championship and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Introduced in 1961, the Super Sport version is without doubt the most exclusive of all Plus 4s. It owes its launch to the racing exploits of Chris Lawrence, who was unbeatable in the "TOK 258" from 1956 onwards and won his class at the 1962 Le Mans 24 Hours. The unique configuration of the Super Sport includes a "Lawrence Tuned" engine preparation, aluminium bodywork and disc brakes. Only 95 examples were produced.
Chassis #5122 is one of these authentic Super Sports. Its Morgan certificate indicates that it left the factory on 31 May 1962, before being sent to Lew Spencer's garage in Los Angeles. Originally, the car would have been delivered in blue with a black leather interior. The invoice file gives us an indication of its successive owners until the mid 1960s. In 1988, its last American owner undertook a complete restoration. Presumably of an excellent standard, as #5122 will participate in many competitions, winning its class at the Morgan N/S California and coming second at the Best of Show of the same event. We will also see it at the Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive Concours, at the San Marino Motor Classic... Its current owner bought it in 2015, before importing it to France. The car is presented to us today in a good general condition. The leather interior has a very nice patina and the paintwork is still well preserved, with a few very slight defects. From a mechanical point of view, the car works wonderfully well. The Lawrence Tuned preparation gives it a very pleasant sporty behaviour, the Weber carburetors feed the 4-cylinder properly, and the aluminium bodywork contributes perfectly to the lightness of the whole. Recently, the car has benefited from a lot of work, among which the clutch has been changed, and a very important mechanical overhaul, or the tyres have been changed. The tonneau cover has also been redone. This is a great opportunity to acquire a very rare and authentic Plus 4 Super Sport in top running condition!
