Description
The MG TB is a classic British sports car that represents an important period in the history of MG. Introduced in 1939, the TB was produced for only a short time before the outbreak of the Second World War brought civilian car production to a halt. Because of its limited production run, the TB is now considered one of the rarer and more desirable pre-war MG sports cars. The TB was a development of the successful MG T-series and featured a compact, lightweight design that made it particularly enjoyable to drive. It was powered by a 1,250 cc four-cylinder overhead-valve engine, producing around 54 horsepower. Although this may seem modest by modern standards, the car's low weight and responsive handling gave it lively performance. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. Visually, the TB has the unmistakable appearance of a traditional pre-war British sports car. Its narrow body, separate front wings, upright radiator grille, wire wheels and folding windscreen give it a distinctive character. The two-seat roadster was designed with driving enjoyment in mind rather than comfort or practicality.
This MG TB spent some of its life in Australia and appears to have been repatriated to the UK in 2016. It presents well, the 1250cc XPAG engine started immediately and we are advised by the vendor that this MG drives with no known faults. Only around 379 examples of the MG TB were built, making surviving cars especially valuable to collectors. Many have been carefully restored and are displayed at classic-car events, where their elegant styling and historical significance attract considerable attention. The MG TB is more than just an old sports car. It captures the spirit of British motoring immediately before the Second World War and demonstrates MG's ability to combine attractive design, simple engineering and enjoyable performance. Today, it remains a highly regarded example of Britain's early sports-car tradition and an important part of MG's heritage. Consigned by Stewart Banks.
