Description

Transmission: 4 gears, Manual gearbox
Registration number: MG-64-51

The MG Magnette was introduced to the general public at the 1953 London Motor Show. This saloon was the brands first monocoque vehicle. That was not the only new feature, a new B-series 14 4-cylinder, 1489cc and 60hp engine had been housed under the bonnet. Leather upholstery and a gleaming wooden dashboard ensured its stylish credentials.
This Magnette was built in 1957, making it a series two or ZB version. The output had been increased to 64 hp enabling a top of 138 km/hr, no too bad for the time at all. Besides the standard series 2 version the more luxurious Varitone became available, characterised by its tow-tone paintwork and larger rear window screen.

It so happens that we have the luxurious Varitone right here. It has a finish of Steel Blue over Mineral Blue, with the large rear window screen draped round the C-pillar. By the way all Varitones started life as a standard before being sent to the Morris Motor bodyshop for the rear window modification and painting of its bare metal body. That, by the way, was not the only time this Magnette stood in the buff. Some years ago the car was taken back to bare metal in order to be prepared for restoration. After a thorough seeing to the Magnette was restored to its former glory, as is shown in the accompanying photographs. In subsequent years, looking at the thick wad of maintenance invoices, the MG was enjoyed unreservedly. Thanks to this level of regular maintenance you are still able to enjoy this Magnette.

The interior has a typical British character and, quite unusually, has a left handed steering wheel. The wood is as gleaming as it appeared 65 years, the upholstery shows the effects of time to some extent. It is quite possible to enjoy the car as it is even though its appearance could be improved upon.

Overall a Magnette ready for classic rallies, gentle touring or to be perfected with here and there a few minor adjusts.
