Description

"In the mid 90’s MGF began production of a number of club race cars to feature in the UK, France and in Japan, the MGF Cup, due to be held in Japan was set for a 1996/97 start with the first 25 set aside for the forthcoming race series. The first MGF, and one of the 25 set aside, was handed over to Osam Morikawa of Rover Japan at the Castle Combe circuit. The white MGF with its very eye catching ‘go faster’ stripes was test driven around the Wiltshire circuit by Osam and a small army of Japanese journalists. The test session was carried out under the careful guidance of the Rover test and development driver Tony Pond, who said that he was convinced that the MGF was destined to become a very successful clubman’s car. At a racing promotion in Japan, Rover Japan were inundated with interest from prospective buyers and no less than 47 competitors applied for cars. The four race series started in July 1995 at Tsukuba and the series was initially extended in 1997 when another batch of cars were to be allocated, it is believed this extended to 30 cars in total.
Offered in its original race colours and livery of Volcano Orange with white racing stripes, we are led to believe that this MGF Japan Cup was originally handbuilt at Gaydon to be delivered to Japan. Serial number 97004 was assembled for team JS1 on 22nd January 1997 and is number four of 30 built with only a handful still surviving today. A perfect track or hill climb car or indeed for any MG collector and enthusiast. Little is known about the specification, but comparisons may be able to be drawn with other series which uses the standard 1.8 VVC engine. Details of the details for modification which is believed to match this example can be found in the history file having been obtained from the MG motorsport.org website run by MG enthusiasts.
This modified MGF works well on the track but is equally happy and legal on the road. It has been highly praised by a former rally driver and Rover MGF test driver who commented that it was a driver’s car - a car you can drive to work on a Monday and race at Silverstone on a Saturday.“A fabulous opportunity for fun or investment.
