"The MGB was launched in May 1962 to replace the MGA. Introduced as a four-cylinder roadster, a coupé with 2+2 seating was added in 1965. The MGB was a relatively modern design at the time of its introduction utilising a monocoque structure instead of the traditional 'body-on-frame' construction used on both the MGA and MGT types. The lightweight design reduced manufacturing costs while adding to overall vehicle strength. Wind-up windows were standard and a comfortable driver's compartment offered plenty of legroom. The MGB's performance was considered brisk at the time of its introduction, with a 0-60mph time of just over 11 seconds aided by the relatively light weight of the car. Handling was certainly one of the MGB's strong points.
Originally registered on 8th April 1971, this MGB has been modified for use on a track, although it has to be noted that this car is still road registered and is legal to use on UK roads. It is fitted with a roll-cage, four-point harness seatbelts and fibreglass front wings, bonnet and boot lid to reduce weight. A separate fuel cell sits in the boot and the ‘B’ series engine, with its side-draught Weber 45 DCOE carburettor, runs well. The engine has been rebuilt and bored to 1950cc and is fitted with a Kent 719SP camshaft and roller rockers. To be expected, the brakes and suspension have been upgraded and a Quaife limited slip differential has been fitted.
