Description

In 1952, Stanley Arnolt fell under the spell of a coupé and a convertible presented by the Italian coachbuilder Bertone in Turin. Built on the chassis of the small MG TD, their innovative lines were the result of the collaboration of Giovanni Bertone, Nuccio Bertone and Franco Scaglione.

Arnolt negotiated an exclusivity contract for these models. The Bertone company, which was in financial difficulty, could not afford to pass up such a windfall. The American importer planned to build 200 units: 100 coupés and 100 convertibles. The chassis, equipped with their engines from the MG factory in Abingdon, were sent to Genoa by boat and then travelled to Turin by lorry. The steel body with aluminium doors was welded to the chassis and not bolted on as was done at MG.

The vehicles were then shipped to the United States and taken to Chicago for final assembly. The vehicle could thus be fitted with the optional Borrani spoke wheels or a Motorola radio. The Arnolt MG was equipped with the 1250cc XPAG engine developing 54 hp from the TD, some units would receive a Shorrock supercharger as an option. Unfortunately, the production did not meet the 200 units because the MG factory stopped supplying the chassis. In the end, a total of 102 vehicles were produced between 1953 and 1954: 67 coupés and 36 convertibles.

This unit is numbered 315 and was registered for the first time in 1953 in the United States. It was fully restored in the early 2000s when it was owned by an American living in Phoenix, Arizona. The bodywork was repainted in its original Old English White colour and the interior was restored in its original Connolly Red colour.

Our Arnolt was imported to France in the early 2000s and is currently in good overall condition. As far as the mechanics are concerned, the vehicle starts at a quarter of a turn and is very easy to handle. An extremely rare model on the European market, there are very few survivors nowadays. Between English mechanics and Italian style of the 1950s, this superb coupé has everything to win you over. According to the Arnolt Register, this vehicle is not painted in its original colour.
