Ford launched a new line of full-size cars for the 1937 model year that would take the previous V-8 model’s powertrain and significantly upgrade creature comforts and sophistication. For 1939, Ford introduced an upscale version called the Mercury Eight, offering two-door coupe and convertible models, in addition to two- and four-door sedans and a four-door convertible.

This lovely 1939 Mercury Eight is a two-door Convertible Coupe model, and while its early history is not documented, it was purchased by the consignor as the basis for a restoration with a few custom touches. Photos on file chronicle the careful stripping of the bodywork and the refinishing in brilliant black – all work that was carried out by the consignor’s in-house staff. The original flathead Mercury V-8 was replaced by a GM small-block V-8 engine, presumed to be a 350 cid unit. Great care was taken to ensure the engine compartment was done as tastefully as possible, and custom valve covers were sourced with “Mercury” embossed on them, lending an air of sophistication to the engine swap. A floor-shifted manual was also fitted, rounding out the potent upgrade.

Perfect for a night on the town or a cruise to any hot rod event, this Mercury is a lovely driver and will certainly garner significant attention wherever it goes.
