Mercury promoted their 1950 six-passenger coupe as a model that combined the compactness of the era’s business car with the broad-shouldered roominess of a sedan. It added up to a good looking, economical and smart way to travel 1950s America. The 1950 Mercury was a car set up to travel; the example on offer is customized, but is up to the task of the car’s original mission of travelling – likely better than the original platform.

The Mercury has been frame-off restored (from 1988 to 1993) in a custom style, and it is brilliant in attention-gathering pink with a pink and white custom vinyl interior. The engine is a 350-cid, 340-hp Chevrolet V-8 unit that runs with three two-barrel (tri-power) carburetion and is matched to an automatic transmission. Among the numerous features is a chopped and lowered platform, “bubble skirts,” lakes pipes, “dummy spots,” 1952 Ford “Frenched” headlights, 1972 Chevy Nova front suspension, 1972 Chevy Nova frame, 1957 Chevrolet rear end with 3.08:1 gear ratio, 1957 Dodge wheel covers, 1976 Cadillac custom steering column and tilt/telescopic wheel, 1949 Mercury dashboard with VDO gauge package, 1955 DeSoto grille, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, radio with CD player, four coats of Ditzler paint, two coats of clear coating, powdercoated frame, stainless steel gas tank, color-coded steel wheels, whitewall tires and dual exhaust.
