Description

Chassis No. 6H28S627186

Moments before the green flag waved all eyes were on the front row of the 1966 Indianapolis 500. As the 33-car pack rounded the fourth turn, Benson Ford, driving a Candy Apple Red 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Pace Car Convertible, peeled off the track down pit lane, and the 50th running of the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" was underway. With upwards of 400,000 fans in attendance and millions more watching on TV, being chosen as Official Pace Car for the great race is a marketing coup for any manufacturer. The Mercury Comet was all new for 1966; no longer sharing the compact Falcon platform, it now was an upgraded midsized Fairlane. The biggest news was the performance Cyclone GT, which Super Stock magazine named "Car of the Year". For 1966, Cyclone GT production numbered 13,812 hardtops and 2,158 convertibles, yet only 100 S-code pace car replicas were produced. All Cyclone GT Pace Cars were convertibles, painted a unique Candy Apple Red, with Parchment interiors, and soft tops. This Pace Car features Ford's 335 hp 390 cu-in V8, C6 three-speed automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, all as from the factory. This is your chance to be the leader of the pack!
