The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG offers the ideal nexus of inspired design and breathtaking performance. Beginning development in 2006, Mercedes-AMG sought to deliver a contemporary, albeit more sinister, spiritual successor to the marque’s iconic midcentury grand tourer, the 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ coupe. Ecstatic press, design awards, and most importantly, orders, all poured into Affalterbach at a prodigious rate following the unveiling of the SLS AMG at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Without exception, it has proven to be an exceptionally desirable modern supercar since day one.
The SLS AMG is a hand assembled machine – from the carbon fiber and aluminum body, to the front mid-mounted engine. In line with the 300 SL’s legacy of endurance racing success AMG developed a new powerplant for the SLS. The resulting “M159” engine is a modern masterpiece: a heavily modified 6.2-liter dry-sump lubricated V-8 engine featuring an aluminum block and crankcase, forged pistons, magnesium intake assembly, and tubular high-flow exhaust system which growls with distinctive menace. Peak torque of 479 pound-feet is achieved at 4,750 rpm, while power arrives in full with 563 hp at 6,800 rpm. The SLS AMG sends this power to the rear wheels via a transaxle configuration utilizing a Formula 1-derived carbon fiber driveshaft paired to a seven-speed AMG “Speedshift” transmission. The “Sport+” driving mode and accompanying launch control sequence bring the 3,752 lbs. coupe to 60-mph in just 3.5-seconds, with sub-100 millisecond shifts and a limited-slip differential assuring optimal acceleration under full power. Tucked inside a set of staggered 19- and 20-inch forged wheels, the six-piston calipers mounted on 14-inch cross drilled rotors bring the SLS AMG to a stop with startling poise. A speed-activated airbrake deploys from the rear hatch to greatly increase downforce, aiding cornering and deacceleration.
This 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG coupe is in exquisite condition. It presents a particularly befitting homage to the 300 SL, clad in Iridium Silver Metallic over Designo Exclusive Red leather. Aluminum trim and Dinamica headliner round out the sensory experience, that is, until the engine roars to life. Acquired by the seller in January 2015, this SLS AMG has covered less than 12,500 miles from new. Optional factory equipment is limited to the forged AMG 10-spoke wheels. This lot is offered with an owner’s manual, maintenance booklet, factory portfolio, two keys, an order sheet, and a Mercedes-Benz trickle charger system.
As the first keystone in Mercedes-AMG’s modern resurgence, this low-mileage SLS AMG would be a superior acquisition for even the most discerning of collectors. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/0120.
