When it was launched in 1989, the Mercedes-Benz R129 series continued the SL dynasty from the Stuttgart automotive giant, a ‘Sport Lightweight' car which began in 1954 with the legendary 300SL Roadster and “Gullwing”, and has survived into its sixth generation with the current R231series.

Traditionally the most sporting model of the Mercedes-Benz line-up, SL’s were eagerly snapped up by the rich and famous when new.

From the hypnotic dance of the electric hood mechanism to the roll bar that automatically flipped up if the car sensed an accident, the SL personified sophistication with all the latest technology such as adaptive suspension with active damping, airbags, traction control, air conditioning, and a superb new five-link rear suspension, all standard equipment.

The Mercedes-Benz SL60 was the short-number production AMG variant SL deemed, at the time, to be the flagship of the range. Its enormously powerful and ultra-smooth 6-liter V8 engine delivered a ferocious performance which could be enjoyed in the luxury cabin for which Mercedes-Benz is renowned.

Costing more than $130,000 when new and delivering close to 410BHP with an unlimited top speed of more than 185MPH the SL60 is a remarkable piece of engineering excellence. To blend such incredible performance with predictable handling and a luxurious, electronics-packed, leather-bound interior is a feat that could only be achieved by Mercedes-Benz and AMG in the nineties.

Now thought of as a bona fide “future classic”, the evidence of the appeal of the very 'best of breed', cars is unmistakable. These cars present a rare opportunity for serious collectors. Pre-Merger AMG cars have become increasingly rare. Essentially cars built by AMG prior to their merging with Mercedes.

AMG created a distribution network in Japan and North America and many of these early cars were converted with AMG parts in period by dealers and distributors. The most desirable of these early cars were cars produced in Germany at Affalterbach, AMG factory headquarters.

The SL500 6.0 AMG is, for all intents and purposes, one of the most complete AMG examples we have seen. It features all of the important AMG parts including the 6.0 motor with correct stamping from AMG, the complete Styling Package, the Multi Piece Wheels, Exhaust, Wood interior accents, AMG Steering wheel and the 300km/h AMG gauges.

All documented with the VIN through Mercedes when the car was delivered new in 1992.

These factory AMG examples are rarely discovered and typically they have very high miles and have been really abused over the years.

Our SL 6.0 AMG features original paint, interior and components all stunningly preserved.

Over the past 2-3 years, original Pre-Merger AMG cars have set records at numerous auctions, including the RM Sothebys Youngtimer collection.

This car marks the next generation of collecting, who are chasing the European Muscle Cars of their generation.

“At Curated, we do not acquire cars simply for inventory but rather based on what the car is. We love interesting provenance, very low production, very low mileage, very special and often weird cars.”
