Description

Unveiled at the March 1989 Geneva Motor Show, the new Mercedes-Benz R129 Series SL range was beautifully engineered. Based around a two-door monocoque bodyshell, its sophisticated, all-round independent suspension (double-wishbone front/five-link rear) was augmented by a host of active and passive safety features including electronic stability control, ventilated ABS disc brakes, adaptive-damping shock absorbers, front airbags and an integral rollover bar that deployed in less than a third of a second if the car ever sensed an impending flip. Suitably cosseting, the convertible's impeccably built cabin consisted of a fully automated power hood and featured such advancements as memory seats, electric windows and mirrors and an adjustable steering column. Yet lurking beneath all the luxury and refinement was a performance orientated sportscar.

First registered 7th April 2000, the penultimate year of the R129's production, this well specified 280 SL is presented in silver with a contrasting exclusive black leather and light burr walnut wood trim. The price new for this example was £54,000 but the original vendor optioned it with Xenon headlamps, anti-glare rear view mirror and CD changer on top of the leather and Burr walnut trim equating to a further £4,938 in options. Following a full vehicle health check the car underwent a full service in June 2025, with the vendor spending in excess of £2,000 including a brake fluid change, gearbox service, new spark plugs, replace sound deadening in bonnet and an air conditioning re-gas. The vendor reports that all electronics work as expected, drives very well and will be driven 90 miles to the auction.

Offered with the desirable hardtop, two original keys and remote fobs, book pack, service records including booklet, numerous bills and receipts for maintenance and an MoT test certificate valid until December 2025 with no advisories. This wonderful modern classic with just five former keepers is well specified and in good condition. Ideal for classic summer motoring with a few modern creature comforts such as air conditioning and electric heated seats! Consigned by Mathew Priddy
