In the early 1980s, Mercedes-Benz began developing a replacement for the legendary SL R107, which had been in production since 1972. It was a major challenge for the engineers in Stuttgart, given the R107's growing popularity over the years. For its replacement, Mercedes put all its know-how to work, producing a car of a level of quality and innovation rarely seen at the time.
Developed in parallel with the prestigious S-Class W140, the new SL - coded R129 - introduced cutting-edge technologies, enhanced passive safety and new engines, including a 5-litre V8 developing 326 bhp. Designed by Bruno Sacco, its pure, taut lines have stood the test of time admirably. In a career spanning almost 13 years, it has undergone only one minor restyling, a testament to the accuracy of its design.
The model on offer is a 1991 500 SL with just over 200,000 km on the clock. Imported into France in 2005, it has had three owners since then. This cabriolet has been modified in the spirit of the AMG creations of the time, with a few distinctive styling elements, without altering the soul of the model. The road test proved conclusive, as attested by its valid technical inspection.
Overhauled in 2023 in the official Mercedes-Benz network, this 500 SL is an excellent project for a return to the origins, or an opportunity to access a V8 convertible with character at a price that is still reasonable. The original hard top is to be found to complete this high-potential package.
