Description

Launched in April 1971, the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL replaced the W113 SL “Pagoda.” Combining luxury and sportiness, the new roadster featured a contemporary shape with modern straight lines, while remaining reverent to its predecessor. Built from 1971–1989, the R107 is the second longest-running production Mercedes-Benz model to date, and it's V-8 engine earned it a place in an entirely new class of power and prestige.

This 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350 SL was delivered through European Motors Ltd. of San Francisco, on January 21, 1972, to its first owner, Flora Komes. Later a prominent Napa Valley vintner, Ms. Komes kept her SL until 2012 when it passed to her estate. Finished in Midnight Blue (DB 904) with matching hardtop, blue MB Tex interior, and canvas soft top, it was equipped with a 4.5-liter V-8, three-speed automatic transmission, air-conditioning, Becker radio, and 14" steel wheels with color-matched covers. This SL was among the earliest US-delivery examples and notably possesses slim bumpers, a single, diminutive side mirror, manual windows, and front-mounted antenna.

Offered with its manual set, tools, jack, spare, and production data card confirming its matching-numbers engine, the Mercedes-Benz presents in astonishingly well-preserved condition throughout, having been refinished in its original Midnight Blue color. Its accompanying maintenance booklet chronicles each service performed during the original owner’s 40-year tenure with the car. Under current ownership, the 350 SL has completed dozens of challenging US-based rallies, performing faultlessly over approximately 7,000 miles. A highly acclaimed restorer in his own right, the owner has also performed exhaustive cosmetic detailing following the rallies, and the 350 SL shows beautifully from top to bottom, placing it among the finest early production examples extant. Factory assembly and inspection markings are visible on numerous undercarriage components, and the consignor states that evidence of early production hand finishing is evident within the doors. Recent maintenance work performed includes a thorough replacement of air-conditioning components, installation of new tires, shock absorbers, wheel bearings, water pump, as well as new fuel lines and pump, with a file of parts and maintenance receipts totaling nearly $40,000.

This 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350 SL harkens from an era when Mercedes-Benz was renowned for its build quality and stringent production standards. With just 44,000 miles accrued since it left the Mercedes-Benz factory in Sindelfingen, Germany five decades ago, this 350 SL is a proud testament to the ultra-successful R107 model, increasingly collectible, and welcome at automotive gatherings of most every kind. Your close inspection of this rare, capable, and versatile modern classic is highly encouraged.
