1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda
The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, better known as the ‘Pagoda’, is among the most beloved classic roadsters produced by the German manufacturer. Designed under the direction of Paul Bracq, the model is renowned for its timeless styling, refined engineering and excellent driving characteristics. The 280 SL represented the final and most powerful version of the W113 series, which was produced between 1963 and 1971. With its distinctive body lines, generous use of chrome and characteristic slightly concave hardtop, the Pagoda became one of the most recognisable Mercedes-Benz models of its era.
This particular example dates from 1971, the final production year of the W113, and is finished in the elegant colour Papyrus White (717), combined with a dark blue interior. The classic colour combination is beautifully complemented by the chrome wheel covers and whitewall tyres. The car features a **new dark blue soft top** and is also supplied with its accompanying **hardtop**. This allows the car to be enjoyed both as an open roadster and in closed configuration.
What makes this 280 SL particularly interesting is its largely original character and the extensive documentation that has been preserved with the car. According to the available information, the car has had only two owners, has never undergone a complete restoration and has been repainted only once in the past. Furthermore, the car retains its original engine and transmission, with numbers corresponding to those recorded on the original Mercedes-Benz data card, making this a matching-numbers example.
The history of this Pagoda takes us back to the United States, where the car was originally delivered new. A particularly interesting detail is the original purchase receipt from November 1970, which remains with the vehicle. Together with the original Illinois registration documents from 1972, this provides a tangible record of its early history. The original service booklet has also been preserved, containing service stamps from Knauz Continental Autos in Lake Forest and Motor Werks of Barrington, both located in Illinois. These documents offer valuable insight into the car's early years and allow part of its mileage history to be traced. The odometer, displaying mileage in miles, currently reads 81,411 miles.
Under the bonnet lies the 2.8-litre inline six-cylinder engine with mechanical fuel injection. This engine is renowned for its smooth power delivery and, combined with the four-speed automatic transmission, provides a particularly pleasant driving experience. The 280 SL was originally developed as a sporty yet comfortable open-top grand tourer, offering a combination of classic Mercedes-Benz engineering, driving comfort and performance that remains highly appreciated today.
The car is accompanied by an extensive collection of original documentation, including the Mercedes-Benz data card, the original service booklet with historical dealer stamps, the original purchase receipt from 1970, the American registration documents from 1972 and the original English-language owner's manual. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz service network booklet and the original vehicle care products brochure have also been preserved.
This Mercedes-Benz 280 SL combines the elegant appearance of the Pagoda with a remarkable, well-documented history and a largely original character. The inclusion of both the hardtop and a new soft top adds further versatility. An attractive example from the final production year of the W113, where not only the car itself, but also its preserved documentation forms an important part of its story.
