Description
The Mercedes-Benz W113 needs little introduction to even the most casual fans of vintage cars. Designed by Paul Bracq and built from 1964 through 1971 as the 230 SL, 250 SL, and, finally, the 280 SL, it replaced the 190 SL and legendary 300 SL all at once. The model became nicknamed the “Pagoda” due to the unique shape of its hardtop and brought a style and compact form that resonated with the buyers of the day. Sophisticated and beautifully engineered, close to 49,000 examples were built.
This stunning 280 SL is from 1971, the final year of model production, and has been restored in its original colors of Signal Red (DB 568) over a black interior. Records on file show that in July 2011, the Mercedes-Benz was purchased by Rion Stalwick of California, who went on to restore the SL, sourcing many parts directly from Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, California. The car was subsequently sold through Mohr Imports of Monterey to an owner in New Jersey, before being purchased by the consignor.
The current presentation is stunning in all respects, and the consignor believes that the odometer reading of 1,320 likely represents the miles traveled since the restoration’s completion. Retaining its factory hardtop, tools and manuals, and accompanied by numerous restoration receipts, this glowing representation of the classic Mercedes-Benz W113 is sure to please its next lucky owner.
