The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster featured here is finished in its stunning, factory correct color combination of Anthracite Grey with a matching removable factory hardtop over a Black interior and Black folding soft top. It was sold new in January 1970 by Imported Cars in Greenwich, Connecticut, and has been under meticulous care since. In 2014, the Pebble Beach Concours-winning specialists of Manns Restoration were commissioned to perform a full restoration, with over $100,000 invested during the process. This 280 SL presents wonderfully today, displays 49,000 documented miles on the odometer, and is still propelled by its numbers matching drivetrain. A plethora of original documentation accompanies this classic Mercedes-Benz, including its original books, tools, service and restoration invoices. We are extremely proud to offer this 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL to the most astute collector, investor or enthusiast who appreciates low mileage and wonderful restored condition.
Model History:
The W113 generation SL-Class was introduced in the summer of 1963 with the 230 SL. Designed to continue the SL line from the 190SL and legendary 300 SL, the new 230 SL provided a sporty driving experience with plentiful comfort. The iconic “Pagoda” shape was defined by the removable hardtop and aluminum boot that concealed the convertible top when not in use. The large chrome grill and three-pointed star up front harked back to the previous generation of SLs, while customers were enticed by the fuel injected inline-six cylinder engine, excellent handling, and powerful brakes.
The 280 SL was first assembled in December 1967 and marked the third and final iteration of the W113 chassis. With an upgraded 2.8 liter 195 horsepower engine, the 280 SL marked the W113’s full transition from a sporty two-seater to a finely appointed sports roadster. Buyers in the U.S. were particularly fond of its potential for luxurious cruising, with most coming to our shores equipped with a factory 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Considered by some to be the last classic SL, the 280 SL has become a highly sought-after automobile by both collectors and motoring enthusiasts.
