1970 Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda Automatic
Cream with black soft-top and Black 'Pagoda' hard top.
- Excellent condition throughout
- Original right hand drive car
- Very good history with original Buff V5 book
In 1963, Mercedes-Benz debuted an all-new roadster to replace the 190 SL and 300 SL - the 230 SL. The 230 SL 'Pagoda' was a stunning Paul Bracq designed two-seat convertible that followed Mercedes' new design language, featuring crisp lines and upright headlights. The nickname 'Pagoda' was quickly adopted thanks to the slightly concave roof on the optional removable hardtop that resembled a pagoda roof. In 1967, Mercedes introduced the third and final iteration of the 'Pagoda', the 280 SL
Both charming and capable, these roadsters also have one of the most beautiful bodies produced in the 1960s. Thanks to their robust inline-six and their luxurious Mercedes interior, they are wonderful cars to be driven and enjoyed.
This original right hand drive car is a superb restored example of the classic Mercedes-Benz Roadster. Under the bonnet is the 2.8-litre ‘M130’ straight-six engine, which produces 168bhp and drives the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer indicates a true 103,000 miles for this very original car supplied to southern Ireland in 1970 and with its original buff V5 booklet.
Having had a through mechanical and cosmetic restoration completing in 2010, this 280 SL’s elegant body is in wonderful, undamaged condition, with straight panels and flush shut lines. Its era-appropriate Cream paintwork has a beautiful finish around the whole car, and all brightwork is also in excellent order, with the chromed bumpers, trim strips and front grille all having been polished to a mirror shine. The black fabric convertible hood fits perfectly and the ‘Pagoda’ hard top roof is finished in black and presents very well. The car rides on the correct set of 14-inch steel wheels with colour-matched hub caps, which are in excellent condition.
Inside the car has been fully retrimmed in the correct black leather, which covers the seats, the door cards and the upper and lower sections of the dashboard. In line with the car’s sparing use since its restoration, the seats feature only the slightest creases to their surfaces, and the rest of the interior upholstery is pristine. Ahead, the glossy black steering wheel is similarly smart, and the wooden ‘dash bows’, speaker grille and centre storage tray add an extra touch of elegance to the already stylish interior.
Restored to a high standard and well cared for subsequently this right-hand drive 1970 280 SL ‘Pagoda’ is a marvelous example of the highly desirable open-top tourer. Presented in superb condition, it will take pride of place in any collection, and is sure to turn heads on every journey.
