Description
Launched in 1963, the Mercedes-Benz SL W113 boasts a Bauhaus-style minimalism that lends it a timeless elegance. The design, coined by Paul Bracq, is devoid of baroque details and sporty pretensions, and its most unique feature is the nickname "Pagoda," a reference to the hardtop's shape, which resembles the roofs of Japanese temples.
Despite being more of a luxury convertible than a sports roadster, the 280 SL still boasts very contemporary performance and technological solutions! With four-wheel disc brakes, a synchronized four-speed manual transmission, Bosch multipoint fuel injection, and power steering, this fifty-year-old classic is one of the most enjoyable to drive and most reminiscent of a modern car.
The 2.8-liter inline-six engine produces 170 hp and 240 Nm. These are impressive figures for 1969, and they translate into very fast driving – the 280 is capable of reaching a top speed of 200 km/h and can accelerate to 100 km/h in around 9 seconds!
This model was sold in the United States in February 1970 and is equipped with a hardtop and factory air conditioning, a rare addition that greatly enhances the driving pleasure. It is in very good condition, having benefited from frequent use and careful, periodic maintenance, including a recent engine restoration at official Mercedes workshops.
