Engine No. 130.980.12.028536

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL "Pagoda" gained immense popularity with its elegant styling and undeniable charm when it first became available in the 1960s. Originally introduced in 1963 as the 230 SL, the new generation "W113" Mercedes roadster earned its Pagoda nickname due to Paul Bracq's distinctive concave removable hardtop that provided owners with the option for all-weather driving. Key roles in shaping the iconic look of the new roadster were played by Mercedes-Benz Engineer Friedrich Geiger, the designer of the famed 300 SL and 540 K, with the 280 SL representing the final iteration of the cherished W113 model.

This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda stands as a wonderfully restored example of this beloved automobile. As indicated by the Data Card on file, the roadster originally left the factory finished in the rarely specified, yet highly attractive color combination of Horizon Blue over a Red MB-Tex interior. Additionally, the "10" in the chassis number signifies a factory four-speed manual transmission that remains on the car today. Further factory equipment includes power steering, a Becker radio, heater, and a removable hardtop.

Shortly after acquisition, the current owners undertook a detailed restoration of the vehicle, entrusting the project to renowned Pagoda restoration firm, Hatch & Sons Automotive, Inc. Invoices beginning in 1996 describe a complete disassembly of the vehicle from the ground up for restoration, showing an attention to detail only possible by an experienced and professional shop. Totaling over $142,000 and spanning over nine years, the records on file and available for review illustrate a top to bottom cosmetic restoration as well as a complete mechanical refresh. It should be noted that while this Pagoda is not fitted with its original matching numbers engine, it is fit with a correct type "M130" 2.8-liter straight-six.

Today, the Pagoda's enduring allure has solidified its status as a coveted collector car, yet few W113 roadsters have been restored to this level of correctness and quality. Optioned in a highly attractive color scheme, it allows the next owner the closest experience to showing and driving a brand-new 280 SL.
