In 1968, the “New Generation” of upscale Mercedes-Benz models, alternatively known as the S-Class, was introduced. These carefully refined five-passenger automobiles continued a tradition of hand-crafted quality and superior engineering, while their formal, classically-inspired styling featured the discreet use of chrome to produce what many consider to be a timeless design. In particular, the Cabriolet variant featured a padded folding top requiring 16 hours of hand labor to complete, while its unitized chassis featured an advanced design with structural reinforcements that provided great rigidity and safety; it is commonly referred to for its “vault-like” construction. As expected, interior appointments were a magnificent combination of leather, wood and chrome.

Base power for “S” models was provided by a 2.8-liter, inline six-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft and dual carburetors, producing 157 horsepower. In SE trim, the “E” stood for “Einspritzung” or fuel injection, and horsepower rose to 180. Capable of top speeds of 120 miles per hour, the 280SE utilized a sophisticated, fully independent suspension, resulting in taut, responsive handling that made the 280SE one of the most satisfying Mercedes-Benz models to drive.

A very attractive example, this particular 1969 280SE Cabriolet is presented in cream with a cognac-toned interior with a chocolate colored canvas soft-top. Along with bucket seating with armrests in the front; this 280SE features desirable factory air conditioning, automatic transmission, clock, original trunk mat, top boot, seatbelts, original manuals with pouch, original toolkit, original spare wheel and tire, original jack, power steering and power four-wheel disc brakes. This cabriolet is reported as a solid, rust-free example that has never been restored, has its original leather upholstery, has been sparingly driven and rides on newer Michelin radial tires.

It is reported that only 1,390 2.8 SE cabriolets were built during a four-year period adding to the prestige and uncommon status of this fine car.
