In 1955, a few years after the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz 300SL as a closed coupe, the German company decided to offer an affordable two-seater strongly inspired by its expensive and advanced big brother. The 190SL, available only as a convertible, equipped with a 1,897 cc four-cylinder engine mated to a manual four-speed gearbox. Unlike the 300SL, the 190SL doesn't feature a tubular chassis; instead, it utilises a shortened chassis from the W121 sedan as its base.
This anthracite grey 190SL, dating back to 1963, is in phenomenal condition, a result of a complete 'nut and bolt' restoration. The body is simply stunning, extensively documented in a beautifully accompanying book. It is sleek, and pure, with excellent fits of the hinged parts. The seams between various sheet metal parts are also beautifully done. Many photos from the restoration are available, showing that not only was the body expertly restored by a specialist, but much of the brightwork was re-chromed as well. As a result, all the brightwork is essentially in a new state, and it contrasts elegantly with the dark grey paint.
Mercedes-Benz designed a fabulous interior for the 190SL, featuring a largely colour-coded dashboard, housing beautiful gauges. Leather dominates the interior, from the stylish dashboard to the door panels and, of course, the seats: beautiful red leather adorns the interior, and carpeting in the same colour completes the look. 'New' seems to be the keyword in the interior because virtually everything you see has been addressed. New upholstery, new carpets, new paintwork: everything about this SL is perfect. The ivory-coloured steering wheel and gear knob in the same colour contrast wonderfully with the otherwise colourful dark grey interior. The VDO gauges are clearly visible and in a top-notch condition, both visually and functionally. What an ambience, what class. Clearly, the interior was thoroughly attended to during the restoration, as there is not a square millimetre lacking perfection, in line with the Mercedes-Benz standard.
Perfection is also the keyword under the hood. The space looks very fresh, and the engine is free from any form of leakage or residue from previous leaks. This four-cylinder with its twin carburettors is also a sight to behold. The engine, like the gearbox and drivetrain, has been completely overhauled and delivers around 105 hp. This enables a top speed of just over 170 km/h. However, honestly, these are not the speeds at which this SL truly excels. Sporty touring on beautiful winding roads, traversing charming villages, occasionally stretching your legs, and especially looking back as you walk away from the car: what a stunning and stylish presence.
The car comes with a beautiful restoration book. An SL like this is a rare find!
