Description

Introduced at the 1954 New York International Auto Show alongside the 300 SL Gullwing, the 190 SL was the brainchild of famed US Mercedes-Benz importer Max Hoffman. Similar in appearance to the 300 SL, yet less complex and costly, the 190 SL’s “Sport Leicht” label denoted a sporting character, including use of lightweight aluminum for the hood, doors, and rear deck lid. Walter Hacker and his design team styled the 190 SL under the direction of Mercedes-Benz design head Karl Wilfert.

According to the consignor, this outstanding 190 SL has been restored by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Southern California in its original colors, per its build record on file, including the contrasting Black (DB 040) hardtop. Close inspection reveals an unusual level of attention, with the underside of the vehicle finished to rival its topside details.

Impeccably presented in its original Elfenbein (Ivory, DB 608) paint color, this beautifully and authentically restored 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is an original US model, delivered on September 24, 1961. As offered, it is particularly well documented, with copies of the original data card, German packing slip, dealer prep sheets, 1961-dated Bill of Sale, owner’s service card and booklets, Mercedes-Benz Zertifikat, specifications sheet, and manuals. Seldom seen in such outstanding colors and condition, this particular 190 SL is worthy of a place in the finest collections the world over.
