Description

Developed with input from legendary US vehicle importer Max Hoffman, the 190 SL debuted to the world at the 1954 New York International Auto Show. Aimed squarely at the rapidly expanding American sports car market, it was designed as a more cost-effective alternative to the 300 SL. Instead of the complex and expensive tubular space-frame chassis of the 300 SL, the 190 SL was built using more conventional monocoque construction, which helped keep the cost down and was far easier to build. In light of this, when the 190 SL went on sale in the US, it was less than half the price of a 300 SL, even when ordered with the optional removable hardtop.

This 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is a stunning example of the model, finished in an elegant color combination of Tunis Beige Metallic over dark blue leather, with a matching dark blue fabric soft top. A description on file notes that this Mercedes-Benz was restored in 1993 and won Best of Show at the 190 SL Club Concours and Mercedes-Benz Club of America StarFest National Concours. According to the consignor, in his care the 190 SL received a bare-metal color change by noted specialist Bob Smith Coachworks of Gainesville, Texas, as well as considerable mechanical refreshing. Fitted with desirable Hella fog lights, a rear jump seat and offered with fitted luggage and a tool roll, this is an excellent opportunity to experience legendary Mercedes-Benz build quality in open-top style.
