Following the success of the 300 SL Coupe and Roadster, Mercedes-Benz's United States importer, Max Hoffman, suggested that a similarly styled, less costly alternative might be successful. The resulting 190 SL proved popular with the public at the 1954 New York Auto Show, and it remained in strong demand throughout its nine-year production run. The 190 SL was well-suited for touring, as it featured copious amounts of luggage space despite having a convertible top.
According to a letter from Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, this example was acquired by the organization in 2010. By this point in the vehicle’s history, a complete restoration had been completed, but certain mechanical aspects needed attention. As such, the Classic Center refreshed the front suspension, braking, and fuel systems. Once the vehicle was brought back to the high standard the organization is known for, the car was sold to the current owner in 2010.

This 190 SL is finished in its factory-correct colors of Fire Engine Red over Crème leather. Both the exterior and interior show in spectacular condition with glossy paint, lustrous chrome, and soft leather, thanks to the hours of labor spent during the restoration. Additionally, the car features a Becker Europa radio and a kinder seat in the rear for a small, third occupant. The car is accompanied by books, a tool roll, and top boot cover.

Under current ownership, the Mercedes-Benz has been part of a private collection stored in a climate-controlled facility. An onsite technician provided maintenance at regular intervals and within the last 50 miles the car received fresh fluids and necessary service for the upcoming sale.

While lacking the high-power engine of the 300 SL, the 190 SL’s attractive looks, shared with its bigger brother, make it an undeniable classic. Perfect for open-top cruising, this example greatly benefits from the experienced hands and uncompromising quality of work from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center.
