Description

Transmission: 4 gears, Manual gearbox
Registration number: PM-13-49

In 1955, when the Mercedes-Benz 300SL had already been on the market for a few years as a closed coupe, the German company decided to introduce an affordable two-seater that was strongly inspired by its expensive and advanced big brother in terms of design. In the case of the 190SL, which was only available as a convertible, it was equipped with a 1,897 cc four-cylinder engine mated to a manual four-speed gearbox. Unlike the 300SL, the 190SL did not have a tubular chassis; instead, it used a shortened chassis from the W121 sedan as its foundation.

The 190 SL you see here dates back to 1959, was delivered new in Germany, and came to the Netherlands a few years ago. The anthracite grey 190SL is in phenomenal condition, which is not surprising after it went through a complete 'nut and bolt' restoration. The bodywork is simply magnificent, with clean lines, purity, and excellent fits of the hinged parts. The seams between the various sheet metal parts are also beautiful. There is a photo album documenting the restoration, which also shows that not only was the bodywork expertly restored by a specialist, but much of its brightwork was also re-chromed. As a result, all the brightwork is essentially in mint condition and stands out in a very elegant way against the dark gray paint.

Mercedes-Benz designed a fantastic interior for the 190SL, with a mostly colour-coded dashboard housing beautiful gauges. Leather dominates the interior with extensive use. The upper and lower parts of the stylish dashboard, door panels, and of course, the seats, are adorned with beautiful red leather, and carpeting in the same color completes the look. 'New' seems to be the magic word in the interior because literally everything you see has been addressed. New upholstery, new carpets, new paintwork: everything about this SL is perfect. There is even a single seat in the rear where someone can temporarily sit crosswise, although we wouldn't recommend it for a vacation to distant places. The ivory-colored steering wheel and gear knob in the same color contrast beautifully with the otherwise colorful dark gray interior. The VDO gauges are clearly visible and in top condition, both visually and functionally. What an ambiance, what class. It's clear that the interior was fully attended to during the restoration because not a square millimeter lacks dedicated ministration, everything has been perfected down to the finest detail, as befits a Mercedes-Benz.

Perfection is also the keyword under the hood. The engine compartment looks very fresh, and the engine is free of any leaks or remnants of previous leaks. This four-cylinder engine with its twin carburetors is also a sight to behold. The engine, like the gearbox and drivetrain, has been completely overhauled and produces about 105 hp. This allows it to reach a top speed of just over 170 km/h. But honestly, these are not the speeds at which this SL truly shines. Sporty touring on beautiful winding roads, passing through charming villages, sometimes stretching your legs, and especially looking back as you walk away from the car: what a stunning and stylish presence.

The car comes with, among other things, the German Productions-Auftrag, the Mercedes-Benz Fahrzeug Daten, and the album with numerous photos of the restoration, showing that the car was completely disassembled down to the last screw and brought back to bare steel."
