In 1953 Mercedes-Benz presented the new 180, a four-door sedan with a four-cylinder in-line engine. After a few years, the variant with 1.9 liter four-cylinder, known to connoisseurs as the W121, follows. A luxury sedan nicknamed Ponton, although that name was never used by Mercedes-Benz itself.
The W120/W121 (four-cylinder) and W180 (six-cylinder) were among the first models to have a patented crumple zone, where the passenger compartment was very rigid and the engine compartment had the function of 'absorbing' the energy in the event of an accident. This made the Ponton one of the safest cars for sale at the time.
Fortunately, the neat 190 you see here has never experienced such unfortunate moments. The car was first registered in 1956 and came to the Netherlands more than 15 years ago. The first impression of the 190 is immediately good: the paint is in a beautiful condition, with the green color giving the car a very stylish appearance. Door frames, body edges and 'hidden' spots are also in good condition. The fits are all neat and the doors close as they should on a Mercedes-Benz: like a safe.
The interior is very stylish in a W120/W121. Its appearance is fantastic and the condition is no less. The dashboard houses the horizontally arranged clock shop and countless buttons, no matter where you look: the first thing that will come to mind is 'quality'.
The same quality continues when it comes to the upholstery, because the seats, doors and floor are in a beautiful condition and equipped with only the most solid materials. The fabric upholstery makes the chairs very comfortable. Remember, in those days fabric upholstery was often the more expensive and optional choice.
Under the hood, the Mercedes looks very neat. A nice clean space and ditto engine. And then we are only talking about the external condition because technically the car is well maintained. Not only does the engine do a fantastic job, the other technology is also perfectly fine. Suspension, brakes, steering, gearbox as well as the electrical circuit and everything that goes with it: this 'Benz' is in the condition it should be.
Driving this 190 is a great pleasure. And then, given the temperature, we have not even driven with the fantastic large open roof in the open position. An option that should provide an incredible amount of fun in the summer. This Mercedes-Benz was ahead of its time when it comes to comfort and driving characteristics. That is noticeable when you drive this car today, where the ease of driving and the solidity of how everything around you feels.
