Description

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 was the pinnacle of German engineering when introduced in 1968. The SEL – signifying S class, Einspritzung (fuel injection), long wheelbase – combined opulent luxury with pneumatic suspension, powered by one of the most formidable engines Stuttgart ever built. This handsome 6.3 was purchased in the late 1980s by Ohio enthusiast Dale Zdolshek, a client of the consignor, who is the proprietor of Precision Motorcars in Cincinnati, Ohio, a Mercedes-Benz repair and restoration facility. When the car was sent to the consignor’s shop for an engine overhaul around 1990, the engine block was found to be damaged and was replaced with one from a Mercedes-Benz 600 SWB. The original block accompanies the car at auction.

In 2014, after a period of occasional use and then static storage, the consignor’s shop prepared the car for restoration. Quality Automotive of Cincinnati completed the paint and bodywork, while Vintage Auto Trim, also of Cincinnati, performed the interior refurbishment. The consignor’s shop handled the extensive mechanical work, with receipts on file totaling over $55,000. The consignor purchased the car from Mr. Zdolshek in fall 2019. Presented with restoration records, a copy of its factory build sheet, parts catalogue, owner’s manual, and tools, this 1969 Mercedes-Benz is an attractive example of the fastest and most desirable four-door sedan of its era.
