Description
The 111 and 112 series 4-door saloons with their pronounced tail fins were accompanied by coupés and cabriolets with a slightly lower waistline and a more rounded tail with less prominent fins. When the Daimler Benz Museum in Untertürkheim was officially opened on the 24th of February 1961, the new Mercedes-Benz 220 Seb coupé was presented. As type W111, the coupé and cabriolet were initially supplied with the same technical specification as the saloon 220 SE. A significant change was available from November 1969 with the introduction of the 3.5 litre V8 engine M116 with 200 horsepower, when examples with the six-cylinder engine also received a revised front with a flatter bonnet and a shallower grill. Consequently, these models became known as high and low grille versions. Our 280 3.5 Cabriolet, one of only 1’232 examples of the 111.027 series, was delivered to the United States on 11 November 1970 and registered there for the first time on 1 July 1971. Well equipped with an automatic gearbox, air condition, leather interior and electrically operated windows, the Mercedes certainly enjoyed a pleasant life and was, as can be seen with the original leather interior, always carefully and meticulously maintained. A few years ago, the Mercedes was imported to Germany, where the coachwork was restored some years ago and repainted in its original colour. The mechanical bits were overhauled where necessary to provide the required reliability to this noble steed. At the beginning of 2015, the 280 SE 3.5 was imported into Switzerland and after passing its MOT was acquired by the ex Formula One driver Adrian Sutil. Shortly afterwards the Cabriolet was taken over by the vendor and has since covered only around 300 kilometres. Currently the rare Benz is in very good condition , still has its matching numbers original engine, and will be handed over to a new owner with the last Veteran MOT from May 2025.
