Description
Introducing the Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet - a classic example of German engineering excellence and post-war automotive luxury.
The W180, better known as the ‘Ponton’, was distinguished by its rounded, harmonious body lines and integrated fenders – a novelty in the 1950s! With its elegant aesthetics and refined driving pleasure, the 220 S appealed to wealthy buyers looking for sophistication and luxury, which meant that fewer than 2,200 units saw the light of day!
Under the bonnet is a 2.2l six-cylinder engine, equipped with two carburettors, which produced approximately 106 hp. At the time, this was a very ‘fast’ car, with smooth, reliable performance and a top speed of around 160 km/h!
Innovation extended to the transmission and chassis, as the 4-speed gearbox, mounted on the steering column, was synchronized and the front suspension was independent, which contributed to a comfortable and stable ride.
The interior was not full of technology, but the comfort and materials were the best in the 1950s, with high-quality materials, wood finishes, leather upholstery and chrome details.
This example was sold new in Portugal in July 1956 and has 32,000 km on the odometer. Part of a private collection for over twenty years, this 220 S benefits from careful maintenance and sporadic use.
In 1993 it participated in the Monte-Carlo Historic Rally without incidents.
