If nowadays AMG and Mercedes are two inseparable brands, it was not the same at the beginning. AMG, was an independent tuner who made himself known to everyone in 1971: the category victory at the 24 Hours of Spa was the beginning of the success story: A Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG won a surprising category victory in Belgium, finishing second overall. From 1988 onwards, AMG and Mercedes worked together, but without a real contract, on cars for the German Touring Car Championship. This collaboration was fruitful from the very first year with six victories in DTM, the German Touring Car Championship. In 1990, the commercial partnership agreement was signed, and the first Mercedes-AMG in series production came out in 1993, it was the C-Class 36 AMG (6-cylinder in-line 3.6 L engine, 280 hp, allowing 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 s and a maximum speed of 250 km/h). This fabulous engine was installed in the E-Class one year later. Combined with a four-speed automatic transmission and a special sports suspension, the 3.6 was a technically advanced unit capable of propelling the E36 at a top speed of 250 km/h. The aerodynamic appendages make for a better CX and give the whole package a deliciously aggressive look.
This AMG station wagon that interests us in these pages is one of the rarest "pre-merger", with only 172 units produced. Delivered new in Japan in left-hand drive and converted on site at AMG JAPAN, this model is equipped with a sunroof, heated sports seats and an automatic differential lock (ASD). It comes with the MERCEDES data card and AMG number plate on the body. Its maintenance file is complete with almost all its Japanese invoices, brought back to France in 2018, more than 5.000€ of expenses were made at a MERCEDES/AMG specialist (viscocoupler, suspension triangle, front discs and pads, tyres, all fluids, bearings...) in order to ensure its optimal functioning, its technical control dated 07/10/2019 is blank. It now has just over 146,000 km on the odometer. This E36 has been passed for homologation and has a French car registration document bearing the mention E36 and approved in 7 seats with its seats in the trunk. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a page from the AMG history of the early days of the cooperation with Mercedes.
