Introduced in mid-1959, the Mercedes-Benz W111 220 series was a natural progression from the 220S range of 1956; the latter had been the first saloon series from Mercedes-Benz to use unitary construction and this was carried on with its successors, together with all-independent suspension and the 2,195cc, single overhead camshaft, straight six engine. All models, however, were larger inside and out with a greater abundance of chromework and superb proportions.
Four basic models were available, the 105bhp 220, the 124bhp 220S with twin Solex carburettors, the 134bhp 220SE with fuel injection and the 170bhp 300SE with 2,996cc engine.
